HLTPAT005 - Collect Specimens for Drugs of Abuse Testing


The course applies to individuals who are involved in collecting specimens for drugs of abuse testing. It will provide individuals with the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment and collect specimens via urine and/or oral and breath testing following the special procedures that apply for drugs of abuse testing in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.  The skills and knowledge gained by completing this course would be beneficial for individuals working in collection centres, in hospitals, in other health care environments and workplaces where drugs of abuse testing take place.

Students will be required to complete additional supervision of work activities by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a fortnight time period.

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

  • Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

    Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours

    Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 8 Hours

  • Participants must have the physical capacity to use the appropriate equipment and complete assessment tasks

    Participants must be able to complete activities in a workplace under the supervision of a person currently in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a two (2) week time period

    Pre-course study: Students may be required to undertake online pre-course work prior to attending the face to face session depending on the course delivery mode.

    Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.

  • Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

    Students will also be required to complete additional supervision of work activities and submit a third-party observation report.

  • This certificate does not require renewal

  • Performance tasks:

    Collect a urine sample for drugs of abuse testing (non-compliant client)

    Collect an oral fluid sample for drugs of abuse testing (tampered sample - problem-solving)

    Collect a breath sample for drugs of abuse testing

    Documentation:

    Chain of custody forms for a urine sample, oral fluid sample, and a breath analysis sample

    Theory assessment:

    A written assessment consisting of short-answer and multiple-choice questions

    Third-party Observation Reports:

    Complete supervised work activities. A third-party observation report must be completed by a person currently working in a collection role for at least 18 hours in a fortnight time period.
